Groundwater 2024 and Outlook Ahead
As 2024 came to a close, groundwater levels across large parts of Sweden were categorized as “Below normal” or “Much below normal,” according to measurements from SGU and Aqvify-monitored wells. This downward trend raises concerns for the year ahead. Explore the latest groundwater levels and 2025 forecasts further down in this newsletter.

2024 compared to Previous Years
The year as a whole offered surprisingly few incidents of critically low groundwater levels—an unexpected outcome given the extreme weather events that impacted nearby regions and the fact that the planet is warmer than ever.
SMHI summarized the year’s weather with the following highlights: Summer brought record-breaking warmth to the northernmost parts of the country, while southern Sweden experienced a more typical Swedish summer. Autumn started with unusually high temperatures, including a new Swedish heat record for September. The year ended with a mild December dominated by low-pressure systems.
Data from many well online with Aqvify indicate a shift in patterns for 2024 compared to previous years. During the summer, groundwater levels decreased less than usual but continued to decline throughout autumn and winter. Normally, levels begin to recover in October, but this did not happen this year. A clear example of this is seen on Gotland, illustrated by well data in the image below.

Forecast
SGU’s forecast for future groundwater level deviations, based on various weather development scenarios, indicates that precipitation above normal levels is required for the levels to recover.
